The activity involved in playing 'active' computer games such as those on the Nintendo Wii is not an adequate replacement for proper exercise, experts have claimed.
A study published in the British Medical Journal found that Nintendo Wii players use just two per cent more energy than those who play regular computer games.
Thirteen to 15-year-olds who played a Wii sports game increased their energy expenditure by just 60kcal per hour when compared to those playing an inactive computer game.
The researchers, from Liverpool John Moores University, claim: 'These increases were of insufficient intensity to contribute towards recommendations for children's daily exercise.'
However, they note that such computer games do stimulate 'positive activity behaviours'.
They conclude: 'Given the current prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity,
